Sacrifice: The Making of a Muslim!

Dhul Hijjah, 1432AH

~~~~~~~~~
Indeed, all praise and thanks are due to Allaah. We praise Him; seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek protection from Him from the evils of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomever Allaah guides, no one can misguide him, and whomever He sends astray, there is no other guide for him. I testify that nothing has any right to be worshipped except Allaah alone, having no partner, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger-may the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him, his family, companions and those who follow them in goodness until the Day of Judgment. To proceed:
Assalaam alaykum wa rahmatullaah wa barakatuuh.
The month of Dhul-Hijjah has come upon us and with it milllions of pilgrims have gathered in the Holy city of Makkah to perform the rites of Hajj, answering the noble call that Prophet Ibrahim (Alayhis-salaam) made ages ago:
وَأَذِّن فِى ٱلنَّاسِ بِٱلْحَجِّ يَأْتُوكَ رِجَالًا وَعَلَىٰ كُلِّ ضَامِرٍ يَأْتِينَ مِن كُلِّ فَجٍّ عَمِيقٍ ﴿٢٧
Q22:27. And proclaim to mankind the Hajj (pilgrimage). They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, they will come from every deep and distant (wide) mountain highway (to perform Hajj).
In performing the rites of Hajj, we are constantly aware of the story of Ibrahim (Alayhis-salaam) and his legacies from the building of the Ka’bah, to his prayer at the Maqam Ibrahim, to the sae between Safa and Marwa, to the spring of Zam-zam, to the standing on the Mount of Arafat, to the stoning of the Jamaraat and to its culmination ultimately in the sacrifice on the day of Eid.
We see in him a life filled with different forms of sacrifice: emigration from his homeland of shirk at a young age, spending his youth and vitality in the call to Allaah, giving up his wife and child in a barren land, expending his energy in the building of the Ka’abah and submission to the will of Allaah to sacrifice his son.
This month, I’m looking at all the little and big ways, the obvious and obscure ways, the easy and hard ways in which sacrifice is mentioned and enjoined upon us in the Noble Quran. I hope that at the end of this month we’ll comprehend better that it is truly not the meat that reaches Allaah but its the heart’s submission and profession as the Rasul (peace&blessings of Allaah be upon him) was commanded to say in Suuratul An-‘Aam Verse 162:
Say, Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds!
PS: Its verses such as Q22:27 above that reminds me of how truly noble and TRUE this deen is and how it spans generations of mankind, and how something that is such an essential part of our deen was actually legislated long before the Rasul (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was raised as a messenger. Indeed, this deen and worship is truly for Allaah alone and I’m so grateful to have been favored with His guidance.
This DAY!!!
Suuratul Maidah Verse 3.
ٱلْيَوْمَ يَئِسَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن دِينِكُمْ فَلَا تَخْشَوْهُمْ وَٱخْشَوْنِ ۚ ٱلْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ ٱلْإِسْلَـٰمَ دِينًا ۚ
فَمَنِ ٱضْطُرَّ فِى مَخْمَصَةٍ غَيْرَ مُتَجَانِفٍ لِّإِثْمٍ ۙ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّـهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ﴿٣
Tafsir Ibn Kathir Volume 3, Page 75.
Allah said,
﴿الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الأِسْلاَمَ دِيناً﴾
(This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.) This, indeed, is the biggest favor from Allah to this Ummah, for He has completed their religion for them, and they, thus, do not need any other religion or any other Prophet except Muhammad . This is why Allah made Muhammad the Final Prophet and sent him to all humans and Jinn. Therefore, the permissible is what he allows, the impermissible is what he prohibits, the Law is what he legislates and everything that he conveys is true and authentic and does not contain lies or contradictions. Allah said;
﴿وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَةُ رَبِّكَ صِدْقاً وَعَدْلاً﴾
 (And the Word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice,) meaning, it is true in what it conveys and just in what it commands and forbids. When Allah completed the religion for Muslims, His favor became complete for them as well. Allah said,
﴿الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الأِسْلاَمَ دِيناً﴾
(This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.) meaning, accept Islam for yourselves, for it is the religion that Allah likes and which He chose for you, and it is that with which He sent the best of the honorable Messengers and the most glorious of His Books. Ibn Jarir recorded that Harun bin `Antarah said that his father said, “When the Ayah,
﴿الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ﴾
(This day, I have perfected your religion for you…) was revealed, during the great day of Hajj (the Day of `Arafah, the ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah) `Umar cried. The Prophet said, `What makes you cry’ He said, `What made me cry is that our religion is being perfected for us. Now it is perfect, nothing is perfect, but it is bound to deteriorate.’ The Prophet said,
«صَدَقْت»
(You have said the truth.)” What supports the meaning of this Hadith is the authentic Hadith,
«إِنَّ الْإِسْلَامَ بَدَأَ غَرِيبًا، وَسَيَعُودُ غَرِيبًا، فَطُوبَى لِلْغُرَبَاء»
(Islam was strange in its beginning and will return strange once more. Therefore, Tuba for the strangers.) Imam Ahmad recorded that Tariq bin Shihab said, “A Jewish man said to `Umar bin Al-Khattab, `O Leader of the Believers! There is a verse in your Book, which is read by all of you (Muslims), and had it been revealed to us, we would have taken that day (on which it was revealed) as a day of celebration.’ `Umar bin Al-Khattab asked, `Which is that verse’ The Jew replied,
﴿الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِى﴾
(This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you…) `Umar replied, `By Allah! I know when and where this verse was revealed to Allah’s Messenger . It was the evening on the Day of `Arafah on a Friday.”’ Al-Bukhari recorded this Hadith through Al-Hasan bin As-Sabbah from Ja`far bin `Awn. Muslim, At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa’i also recorded this Hadith.
Let us be Muslims!
Suuratul – Baqarah Verse 128.
رَبَّنَا وَٱجْعَلْنَا مُسْلِمَيْنِ لَكَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِنَآ أُمَّةً مُّسْلِمَةً لَّكَ وَأَرِنَا مَنَاسِكَنَا وَتُبْ عَلَيْنَآ ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ ﴿١٢٨
128. “Our Lord, and make us Muslims [in submission] to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation [in submission] to You, and show us our Manasik (all the ceremonies of pilgrimage – Hajj and ‘Umrah, etc.), and accept our repentance. Truly, You are the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.
Tafsir Ibn Kathir Volume 1, Page 386.
Allah said that Ibrahim and Isma`il supplicated to Him,
﴿رَبَّنَا وَاجْعَلْنَا مُسْلِمَيْنِ لَكَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِنَآ أُمَّةً مُّسْلِمَةً لَّكَ وَأَرِنَا مَنَاسِكَنَا وَتُبْ عَلَيْنَآ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ ﴾
 (Our Lord! And make us submissive unto You and of our offspring a nation submissive unto You, and show us our Manasik, and accept our repentance. Truly, You are the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.)
Ibn Jarir said, “They meant by their supplication, `Make us submit to Your command and obedience and not associate anyone with You in obedience or worship.”Also, `Ikrimah commented on the Ayah,
﴿رَبَّنَا وَاجْعَلْنَا مُسْلِمَيْنِ لَكَ﴾
(Our Lord! And make us submissive unto You) “Allah said, `I shall do that.”’
﴿وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِنَآ أُمَّةً مُّسْلِمَةً لَّكَ﴾
 (And of our offspring a nation submissive unto You) Allah said, `I shall do that.'”
This supplication by Ibrahim and Isma`il is similar to what Allah informed us of about His believing servants,
﴿وَالَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّـتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَاماً ﴾
 (And those who say: `Our Lord! Bestow on us from our wives and our offspring the comfort of our eyes, and make us leaders of the Muttaqin) (25:74).
The best ten Days!!!
Suuratul- Fajr Verse 2.
وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ ﴿٢
2. By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah)
Tafsir Ibn Kathir Volume 10, Page 468.
`The ten nights’ refers to the (first) ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. This was said by Ibn `Abbas, Ibn Zubayr, Mujahid and others among the Salaf and the latter generations. It has been confirmed in Sahih Al-Bukhari from Ibn `Abbas that the Prophet said,
«مَا مِنْ أَيَّامٍ الْعَمَلُ الصَّالِحُ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللهِ فِيهِنَّ مِنْ هذِهِ الْأَيَّام»
 (There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these days) meaning the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. They said, “Not even fighting Jihad in the way of Allah” He replied,
«وَلَا الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ، إِلَّا رَجُلًا خَرَجَ بِنَفْسِهِ وَمَالِهِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَرْجِعْ مِنْ ذلِكَ بِشَيْء»
 (Not even Jihad in the way of Allah; except for a man who goes out (for Jihad) with his self and his wealth, and he does not return with any of that).
PS: I’m deviating from the monthly theme (O ye who believe) to celebrate the significance of the best 10 days of each year (similar to the best 10 nights in Ramadan) as they are mentioned in the Qur’an here in the last Juz.
