As-Samad: The Absolute!

Suuratul – Ikhlaas

بِسْمِ ٱللَّـهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِقُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّـهُ أَحَدٌ ﴿١﴾ ٱللَّـهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ ﴿٢﴾ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ ﴿٣﴾ وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ ﴿٤


1. 
Say: “He is Allah, (the) One.

2. Allah-us-Samad.

3. “He begets not, nor was He begotten;

4. “And there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him.”

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Imam Ahmad recorded from Ubayy bin Ka`b that the idolators said to the Prophet , “O Muhammad! Tell us the lineage of your Lord.” So Allah revealed

﴿قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ – اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ – لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ – وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَّهُ كُفُواً أَحَدٌ ﴾

Say: “He is Allah, One. Allah He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is non comparable to Him.”

Similar was recorded by At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Jarir and they added in their narration that he said,

﴿الصَّمَدُ﴾

As-Samad

is One Who does not give birth, nor was He born, because there is nothing that is born except that it will die, and there is nothing that dies except that it leaves behind inheritance, and indeed Allah does not die and He does not leave behind any inheritance.

﴿وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَّهُ كُفُواً أَحَدٌ ﴾

And there is none comparable to Him.

This means that there is none similar to Him, none equal to Him and there is nothing at all like Him.” Ibn Abi Hatim also recorded it and At-Tirmidhi mentioned it as a Mursal narration. Then At-Tirmidhi said, “And this is the most correct.”

Al-Lateef: The Most Subtle!

Suuratul -Mulk Verse 14

أَلَا يَعْلَمُ مَنْ خَلَقَ وَهُوَ ٱللَّطِيفُ ٱلْخَبِيرُ ﴿١٤

14. Should not He Who has created know? And He is the Most Kind and Courteous (to His slaves) All-Aware (of everything).

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Abu Al-`Aliyah said that Allah’s statement,

﴿وَهُوَ اللَّطِيفُ الْخَبِيرُ﴾

He is the Most Subtle, Well-Acquainted (with all things).

means, “He is the Most Subtle, bringing forth all things, Well-Acquainted with their position and place.” Allah knows best. In another Ayah, Allah mentions Luqman’s advice to his son,

﴿يبُنَىَّ إِنَّهَآ إِن تَكُ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِّنْ خَرْدَلٍ فَتَكُنْ فِى صَخْرَةٍ أَوْ فِى السَّمَـوَتِ أَوْ فِى الاٌّرْضِ يَأْتِ بِهَا اللَّهُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَطِيفٌ خَبِيرٌ ﴾

O my son! If it be (anything) equal to the weight of grain of mustard seed, and though it be in a rock, or in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Verily, Allah is Most Subtle, Well Acquainted 31:16

meaning, His knowledge is subtle, for nothing is hidden from Him, no matter how small, subtle and minute.

﴿خَبِيرٌ﴾

Well-Aware.

even of the footsteps of an ant in the darkest night.

The Best Names belong To HIM!

Suuratul – Hashr Verses 23 and 24

 هُوَ ٱللَّـهُ ٱلَّذِى لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱلْقُدُّوسُ ٱلسَّلَـٰمُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُ ٱلْمُهَيْمِنُ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْجَبَّارُ ٱلْمُتَكَبِّرُ ۚ سُبْحَـٰنَ ٱللَّـهِ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ ﴿٢٣

هُوَ ٱللَّـهُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُ ٱلْبَارِئُ ٱلْمُصَوِّرُ ۖلَهُ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۚ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ ﴿٢٤

23. He is Allah than Whom there is La ilaha illa Huwa the King, the Holy, the One Free from all defects, the Giver of security, the Watcher over His creatures, the All-Mighty, the Compeller, the Supreme. Glory be to Allah! above all that they associate as partners with Him.

24. He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor of all things, the Bestower of forms. To Him belong the Best Names . All that is in the heavens and the earth glorify Him. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir Volume 9, Page 577.

Allah the Exalted said,

﴿هُوَ اللَّهُ الَّذِى لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ الْمَلِكُ﴾

He is Allah, beside Whom La ilaha illa Huwa, Al-Malik.

Al-Malik, meaning “The Owner and King of all things,” Who has full power over them without resistance or hindrance. Allah’s statement,

﴿الْقُدُّوسُ﴾

Al-Quddus,

meaning “The Pure,” according to Wahb bin Munabbih, while Mujahid and Qatadah said that Al-Quddus means “The Blessed.” Ibn Jurayj said that Al-Quddus means “He Whom the honorable angels glorify.”

﴿السَّلَـمُ﴾

As-Salam,

meaning “Free from any defects or shortcomings that lessen or decrease His perfect attributes and actions.” Allah’s statement,

﴿الْمُؤْمِنُ﴾

Al-Mu’min,

means “Who has granted safety to His servants by promising that He will never be unjust to them, ” according to Ad-Dahhak who reported it from Ibn `Abbas. Qatadah said that Al-Mu’min means that “Allah affirms that His statements are true,” while Ibn Zayd said that it means, “He attested to His faithful servants’ having faith in Him.” Allah’s statement,

﴿الْمُهَيْمِنُ﴾

Al-Muhaymin,

means, according to Ibn `Abbas and others, “The Witness for His servants actions,” that is, the Ever-Watcher over them.

 Allah said 

﴿الْعَزِيزُ﴾

Al-`Aziz,

meaning that “He is the Almighty, Dominant over all things.” Therefore, His majesty is never violated, due to His might, greatness, irresistible power and pride. Allah said;

﴿الْجَبَّارُ الْمُتَكَبِّرُ﴾

Al-Jabbar, Al-Mutakabbir,

meaning “The Only One worthy of being the Compeller and Supreme.”  Allah the Exalted said,

﴿سُبْحَـنَ اللَّهِ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ﴾

Glory be to Allah! (High is He) above all that they associate as partners with Him.

﴿هُوَ اللَّهُ الْخَـلِقُ الْبَارِىءُ الْمُصَوِّرُ﴾

He is Allah, Al-Khaliq, Al-Bari, Al-Musawwir.

Al-Khaliq refers to measuring and proportioning, Al-Bari refers to inventing and bringing into existence what He has created and measured. Surely, none except Allah is able to measure, bring forth and create whatever He wills to come to existence. Allah’s statement, means, if Allah wills something, He merely says to it “be” and it comes to existence in the form that He wills and the shape He chooses.

Ar-Rahmaan: The Most Beneficent!

Suuratul -Rahmaan Verse 1

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ ﴿١﴾ عَلَّمَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ ﴿٢﴾ خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ ﴿٣﴾عَلَّمَهُ ٱلْبَيَانَ ﴿٤

1. The Most Beneficent (Allah)! 2. Has taught the Qur’an.

3. He created man. 4. He taught him eloquent speech.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

From `Abdur-Rahman bin `Awf that he heard the Messenger of Allah say,

«قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالى: أَنَا الرَّحْمنُ خَلَقْتُ الرَّحِمَ وَشَقَقْتُ لَهَا اسْمًا مِنِ اسْمِي، فَمَنْ وَصَلَهَا وَصَلْتُهُ وَمَنْ قَطَعَها قَطَعْتُهُ»

Allah the Exalted said, ‘I Am Ar-Rahman. I created the Raham (womb, i.e. family relations) and derived a name for it from My Name. Hence, whoever keeps it, I will keep ties to him, and whoever severs it, I will sever ties with him.’

Al-Qurtubi said, “It was said that both Ar-Rahman and Ar-Rahim have the same meaning as Abu `Ubayd has stated. Abu `Ali Al-Farisi said, `Ar-Rahman, which is exclusively for Allah, is a name that encompasses every type of mercy that Allah has. Ar-Rahim is what effects the believers, for Allah said,

﴿وَكَانَ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَحِيماً﴾

And He is ever Rahim (merciful) to the believers.’ (33:43)

Also, Ibn `Abbas said – about Ar-Rahman and Ar-Rahim, `They are two soft names, one of them is softer than the other (meaning it carries more implications of mercy).”’

Ibn Jarir said; As-Surri bin Yahya At-Tamimi narrated to me that `Uthman bin Zufar related that Al-`Azrami said about Ar-Rahman and Ar-Rahim, “He is Ar-Rahman with all creation and Ar-Rahim with the believers.” Hence. Allah’s statement,

﴿الرَّحْمَـنُ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ اسْتَوَى ﴾

(Ar-Rahman (Allah) rose over (Istawa) the (Mighty) Throne (in a manner that suits His majesty).) (20:5)

Allah thus mentioned the Istawa – rising over the Throne – along with His Name Ar-Rahman, to indicate that His mercy encompasses all of His creation. Allah also said,

﴿وَكَانَ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَحِيماً﴾

(And He is ever Rahim (merciful) to the believers),

thus encompassing the believers with His Name Ar-Rahim. They said, “This testifies to the fact that Ar-Rahman carries a broader scope of meanings pertaining to the mercy of Allah with His creation in both lives. Meanwhile, Ar-Rahim is exclusively for the believers.” Yet, we should mention that there is a supplication that reads,

«رَحْمنَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ وَرَحِيمَهُمَا»

(The Rahman and the Rahim of this life and the Hereafter)

Ar-Razzaaq: He provides for my needs!

Suuratul – Dhariyaat verse 58.

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ ٱلْجِنَّ وَٱلْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ﴿٥٦﴾ مَآ أُرِيدُ مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ وَمَآ أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِ﴿٥٧﴾ إِنَّ ٱللَّـهَ هُوَ ٱلرَّزَّاقُ ذُو ٱلْقُوَّةِ ٱلْمَتِينُ ﴿٥٨

56. And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).

57. I seek not any provision from them (i.e. provision for themselves or for My creatures) nor do I ask that they should feed Me (i.e. feed themselves or My creatures).

58. Verily, Allah is the All-Provider, Owner of Power, the Most Strong.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Allah the Exalted and Most Honored said,

﴿وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالإِنسَ إِلاَّ لِيَعْبُدُونِ ﴾

And I created not the Jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me.

meaning, `I, Allah, only created them so that I order them to worship Me, not that I need them.’ `Ali bin Abi Talhah reported that Ibn `Abbas commented on the Ayah,

﴿إِلاَّ لِيَعْبُدُونِ﴾

(…except that they should worship Me.) meaning, “So that they worship Me, willingly or unwillingly.” Allah the Exalted said,

﴿مَآ أُرِيدُ مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ وَمَآ أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِ – إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الرَّزَّاقُ ذُو الْقُوَّةِ الْمَتِينُ ﴾

I seek not any provision from them nor do I ask that they should feed Me. Verily, Allah is the All-Provider, Owner of power, the Most Strong.

The meaning of this Ayah (51:56) is that, Allah the Exalted, the Blessed created the creatures so that they worship Him Alone without partners. Those who obey Him will be rewarded with the best rewards, while those who disobey Him will receive the worst punishment from Him. Allah stated that He does not need creatures, but rather, they are in need of Him in all conditions. He is alone their Creator and Provider. Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,

«قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى: يَاابْنَ آدَمَ تَفَرَّغْ لِعِبَادَتِي أَمْلَأْ صَدْرَكَ غِنًى وَأَسُدَّ فَقْرَكَ، وَإِلَّا تَفْعَلْ، مَلَأْتُ صَدْرَكَ شُغْلًا وَلَمْ أَسُدَّ فَقْرَك»

Allah the Exalted said, “O Son of Adam! Busy yourself in worshipping Me, and I will fill your chest with riches and dissipate your meekness. Otherwise, I will fill your chest with distracting affairs and will not do away with your meekness.”

At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah collected this Hadith and At-Tirmidhi said, “Hasan Gharib.”

Ash-Shakuur…Al-Hameed: The Appreciative…The Worthy of Praise!

Suuratul – Shuuraa Verses 23 and 28.

ذَٰلِكَ ٱلَّذِى يُبَشِّرُ ٱللَّـهُ عِبَادَهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ ۗ قُل لَّآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَجْرًا إِلَّا ٱلْمَوَدَّةَ فِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ ۗ وَمَن يَقْتَرِفْ حَسَنَةً نَّزِدْ لَهُۥ فِيهَا حُسْنًا ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّـهَ غَفُورٌ شَكُورٌ ﴿٢٣

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُنَزِّلُ ٱلْغَيْثَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا قَنَطُوا۟ وَيَنشُرُ رَحْمَتَهُۥ ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْوَلِىُّ ٱلْحَمِيدُ ﴿٢٨

23. That is (the Paradise) whereof Allah gives glad tidings to His slaves who believe and do righteous good deeds. Say: “No reward do I ask of you for this except to be kind to me for my kinship with you.” And whoever earns a good righteous deed, We shall give him an increase of good in respect thereof. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Ready to appreciate.

28. And He it is Who sends down the rain after they have despaired, and spreads abroad His Mercy. And He is the Wali (Helper, Supporter, Protector, etc.), Worthy of all Praise.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir Volume 8, Pages 586 and 591.

﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ شَكُورٌ﴾

Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Ready to appreciate.

means, He forgives many bad deeds and increases a small amount of good deeds; He conceals and forgives sins and He multiplies and increases the reward of good deeds.

Qatadah said, “We were told that a man said to `Umar bin Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, `O Commander of the faithful, no rain has come and the people are in despair.’ `Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said, `Rain will be sent upon you,’ and he recited:

﴿وَهُوَ الَّذِى يُنَزِّلُ الْغَيْثَ مِن بَعْدِ مَا قَنَطُواْ وَيَنشُرُ رَحْمَتَهُ وَهُوَ الْوَلِىُّ الْحَمِيدُ ﴾

And He it is Who sends down the rain after they have despaired, and spreads His mercy. And He is the Protector, Worthy of all praise.”

Meaning He is the One Who is in control of His creation, taking care of what will benefit them in this world and the Hereafter, and the consequences of all His decrees and actions are good, for which He is worthy of all praise.

Al-Azeez: The All-Mighty!

Suuratul – Zumar Verse 37.

 وَمَن يَهْدِ ٱللَّـهُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِن مُّضِلٍّ ۗ أَلَيْسَ ٱللَّـهُ بِعَزِيزٍ ذِى ٱنتِقَامٍ ﴿٣٧

37. And whomsoever Allah guides, for him there will be no misleader. Is not Allah All-Mighty, Possessor of Retribution?

Tafsir Ibn Kathir Volume 8, Page 392

Allah says:

﴿وَمَن يُضْلِلِ اللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُ مِنْ هَادٍوَمَن يَهْدِ اللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُ مِن مُّضِلٍّ أَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِعَزِيزٍ ذِى انتِقَامٍ ﴾

And whom Allah sends astray, for him there will be no guide. And whomsoever Allah guides, for him there will be no misleader. Is not Allah Almighty, Possessor of Retribution

meaning, whoever relies on Him and turns to Him, will never be forsaken, for He is the Almighty Who cannot be overwhelmed by another, and there is none more severe than Him in exacting retribution on those who disbelieve in Him, associate others in worship with Him and resist His Messenger .

Al-Wahhaab: He bestows countless blessings!

Suuratul – Sa’ad Verse 35.

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَهَبْ لِى مُلْكًا لَّا يَنۢبَغِى لِأَحَدٍ مِّنۢ بَعْدِىٓ ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْوَهَّابُ ﴿٣٥

35. He said: “My Lord! Forgive me, and bestow upon me a kingdom such as shall not belong to any other after me: Verily, You are the Bestower.”

Tafsir Ibn Kathir 

This Ayah is telling us that Allah is the One Who provides or withholds, the Bestower Who is running the affairs of His creation as He wills. He makes rich whomever He wills, and He makes poor whomever He wills, by the wisdom that is His.

Ibn `Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “This means He is Generous and Rich (Independent of means).” The meaning is that He is Most Generous to His servants, granting ongoing blessings for which they can never sufficiently thank Him.

﴿وَإِن تَعُدُّواْ نِعْمَةَ اللَّهِ لاَ تُحْصُوهَا﴾

And if you would count the favors of Allah, never could you be able to count them… (16:18).

Al-Fattaah: The Just Judge!

Suuratul -Saba Verse 26

قُلْ يَجْمَعُ بَيْنَنَا رَبُّنَا ثُمَّ يَفْتَحُ بَيْنَنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَهُوَ ٱلْفَتَّاحُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ﴿٢٦

26. Say: “Our Lord will assemble us all together (on the Day of Resurrection), then He will judge between us with truth. And He is the All-Knowing Judge.”

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Allah said,

﴿فَاللَّهُ يَحْكُمُ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَـمَةِ فِيمَا كَانُواْ فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ﴾

Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection about that wherein they have been differing.

meaning, that Allah will gather them all on the Day of Return. On that Day, Allah will justly judge between them, for He is never unjust with anyone, even as little as the weight of an atom.
